Visual Management is a LEAN technique originally used within manufacturing. It was developed by the Japanese as is sometimes referred to as the 5-S technique. The idea is a simple one - anyone entering a workplace can quickly understand what's going on or what needs to happen. Pictures and diagrams are often used to get messages across. For example if you want someone to understand how tools need to be organised in a toolbox then the easiest way is to have a large image showing the right way to do it.
Although visual management originated in factories it can be effectively applied in offices too. It helps employees to understand work priorities, highlight whether performance or standards have been met, ensure safe and effective working practices and cuts down on discussion and explanation of tasks.
